Last.fm

Overview

Last.fm is a little confusing at first. Users can get music recommendations based on their iTunes and Windows Media Player libraries and others. They can search for artists and find small biographies on them, their albums and listen to the tracks available. Users can add songs they like to their library. Last.fm also puts together a list of recommendations based on your searches and songs you've favorited or added to your library. These lists are called stations and the user can even create new ones. Once the user sets location, Last.fm will recommend events near that location and also provides music videos. If you add friends, it will show what they are listening to. Users can leave their comments below the track they're listening to. One of the great things about this network is that it shows bands that have a similar sound to the one you're listening to. It's a great way to discover new muscians and their music. The big downside is, however, that it is very confusing when you've never encountered anything like it.

Actions to Take

* If you decide to enable the friends feature, protect your information. *Always be mindful not to post information that would make it easy for a stranger to locate your family. This includes using the geographic locater on Last.fm. Children should not enable this. *Encourage children to never meet with strangers. In fact, parents should only allow children to communicate with friends they know offline first. *Children must make sure they are honest about their age on their profile. *Teach your children to trust their instincts. If they feel threatened by someone or uncomfortable because of something on Last.fm they should tell you or another adult, report it to the police or the Last.fm admin.
